Toasted Flaked Almonds in a glass jar

It's worth taking the 5 mins to toast some flaked almonds. I made this Bakewell Tart Recipe and decided to toast a jar full of flaked nuts to use a few and save the rest for another time.

How to Toast Flaked Almonds

You don't need any oil for toasting. What you do need is a small frying pan. I found it much easier to toast the nuts in small batches. Around 30g each time. That way, if you burn some, all is not lost.

You will need to keep an eye on the pan. Even on moderate heat, the nuts can burn to leave a terrible taste. Get the temperature right and you'll have a sweet nutty flavour.

Place about 30g of Blanched Flaked Almonds into a small dry frying pan over moderate heat. No oil or butter required. Keep stirring the Almonds around the pan as you watch them gently turn a light golden brown colour.

After a couple of mins, you will begin to smell the nutty aroma of toasted nuts. They will start to change colour. This is the time when you really need to keep an eye on them.

When they have reached a lovely golden colour. Take off the heat and leave to cool. They will continue to toast in the residual heat from the pan.

If you don't want them to carry on toasting, turn them onto a cold plate to cool completely.

Keep them in the fridge in a clean jar. Make a note of the use by/best by date on the original packet of Flaked Almonds.

There is another way you can Toast Flaked Almonds. In the oven. Scatter then on a baking sheet and baker in a moderate oven for a few minutes.

The downside of that is. You need to wait for the oven to come up to temperature first. There's also the risk that you will forget about them and they will burn.

It's far quicker and easier to toast almonds in a small frying pan.

Why this Recipe Works.

This is a quick and easy way to Toast Almonds when you can't buy them in the shops.

Toasting nuts in a pan is much quicker than toasting them in the oven. By the time the oven heats up, the nuts will be done.

They not only add a slightly nutty flavour to your baking. They also add additional colour too.

If you need toasted ground almonds. Give then a blitz in the food processor.
